Baruch Gottlieb's PATTERNS of amplified intimacy presents

"Tropic of Tasty Topical Tapestries"

How it will look Process Content Why? Support Materials
Baruch Gottlieb's PATTERNs: are ornamental social commentaries for public spaces.  The first PATTERN floor will be made of paper and installed in the LOOP Gallery downtown Seoul, S. Korea, in February 2002.   PATTERNs incorporate to socially powerful images, their salient aspects are excerpted and joined into an infinitely repeatable configuration, that is at once visually pleasant and gradually viscerally moving.  The repeated event in a pattern recalls the psychological phenomena of behavioral patterns, remembering, reworking some trauma to healing.

Motion Floor Pattern Project:

How it will look:

The projection floor will become an ornamental tapestry, patterns of images of emotional public events. A series of 30-40 tapestries will gently alternate on an uneven, breathing cycle. The pattern is of course designed to seamlessly unite the 4 projections in one immense entity.

There will be an informative web counterpart to the floor installation, with commentary on the origins and personal resonances (including hypertext resonances) of the individual patterns on display, this web site will evolve from the beginning of the creation process of this project, including photos of the site and collaborators.  With Japanese translation.

Process

I will spend 3 weeks in Tokyo around April 2002.  I will gorge myself on as much Japanese mass media as I can, during this period, scanning, videoing, and taking digital snaps.  For much of this work I will be assisted by Hitomi Kamanaka, radical documentary maker.

The raw material will be reprocessed by computer, using mainly Photoshop, Flash and Final Cut Pro.

I am also into doing media art performance workshops during this period, as part of my process to accumulate the highest quality, most salient and striking material for this work.  Brilliant interior designer Yuki Ito is ready to help animate the workshops.

The final product will be projection ready in whatever format you prefer.

Content

Images from the contemporary Japanese media psyche, mainly,  but not exclusively, accumulated from mass-media sources (tv, publications, internet...) Other, more personal images will be incorporated as well, to give the work a sense of identity, individuality and more emotional depth.

Why?

As I said above, I am already working on a very exciting floor-art project and I will be in your neighborhood for the whole first quarter of 2002, or thereabouts.  The PATTERN is perfectly suited for the floor.  The high skin content on this work has a visceral power underfoot, especially when it is the skin of glitterati.

This work is at once local and global, as an international artist, my work increasingly has the adaptable flair of setting up a sense of home on short notice, acquainting myself with widely divergent local ways, and finding my place.   My work lives in the moment and somehow extends the moment a little longer, allowing for reflection and feeling, a resonant space.  The white-hot urgency of the current is captured and diffused through the pattern to create a warm slightly (but uniquely urban) historical effect.

Getting at the depth behind the superficial hyper-mediated metropolitan experience, the PATTERN is peaceful, energizing and inspirational.
